LAMINATION

  • The lamination process is deceptively simple. The most common laminates consist of a strong nylon or polyester scrim, sandwiched between layers of vinyl (PVC) or other polymer films using the right combination of heat, pressure and adhesives.
  • The substrate is the material that gives the laminate strength, and is usually laminated between two layers of film. In addition to the nylon or polyester scrims, which we produce ourselves, we can also use non-woven fabrics, and laminate cloth to cloth and cloth to vinyl.
  • Scrims can be woven or knit, nylon or polyester. Knit scrims have become very popular because of their high strength-to-cost ratio, low stretch and relatively flat appearance. Woven scrims are used where maximum strength is desired, such as in the fabric we produce for government use. Polyester has replaced most of the nylon in scrims because it offers more dimensional stability, less stretch, better lay-flat and is easier to flame-retard.
  • Embossing is done during the laminating process, providing the different textures on the top surface of the laminate. The most common emboss is Faille (pronounced "file" and sometimes referred to as "taffeta"), while LeatherLike™ Lite emboss is popular with manufacturers of athletic equipment. Our smooth, shiny Gloss emboss has made our WeatherSpan™ tent fabric the standard of the tent industry. AdverTex™ banner fabrics feature a Smooth Dull emboss suitable for both screen printing and vinyl graphics.
  • Stripes are another Snyder specialty. Using our patented PermaBar™ process, we manufacture the stripes by laminating vinyl strips to the top surface of the laminate. This process is far superior to conventional printed stripes, because the stripes are highly resistant to abrasion and UV. You can custom design your own fabrics, selecting from a variety of colors and patterns.
  • In addition to vinyl, we have the capability to laminate any specialized film.
  • We manufacture our own adhesives, formulating each one for the particular end use of the fabric. This is where we add anti-bacterial agents, mildew inhibitors, UV and heat stabilizers, and flame retardants as needed.
